I would have said the same. I found a website dated April of 2006 by the HUman Genome scientists - aimed at school kids. One question was whether race could be determined by nuclear DNA and the response was no - not yet. However, I then found papers on the work of some scientist (I'll find his name) which seems to suggest that he HAS found a way to determine race from nuclear DNA. His methodology was based upon detecting genetic illnesses which were found in certain races of people (i.e. sickle cell) and he claimed a very high degree of accuracy in his tests.
It is a very recent development though and the criticism of it was that it hadn't been subjected to peer review.
Some labs offer to detect race from DNA - but it could be from mitochondrial DNA.
