Default Family scours area for boy - High Point, NC

    10-27-02

By CHERIS HODGES, Staff Writer News & Record

HIGH POINT -- The search for a missing 13-year-old continued Saturday with the help of a state police helicopter and a tracking dog, and his family has started a reward fund for information leading to his return.

Christopher Dixon was last seen in front of his family's home on Gordon Road on Thursday about 3:30 p.m. One witness may have seen him later that afternoon.

Police, family, community and church members have since been combing the wooded areas around the house.

The family is taking donations for a reward to be given for information leading to Christopher's return, said Laura Gentry, Christopher's cousin. She said the family has received $400 in donations so far.

"My husband and I went to the mall (Saturday night) and passed out fliers to kids hanging out there. We're asking kids if they have heard anything, any kind of rumor or anything, to call the police," she said.

Officers didn't search the woods Saturday, but neighbors continued their efforts.

Charles Mustian, pastor of Midway Baptist Church, said he and other volunteers spent about two-and-a-half hours in the woods Saturday.

Volunteers also visited houses in the neighborhood to distribute fliers with Christopher's picture on them, Mustian said.

Gentry asked nearby property owners to look over their land to see if there are signs Christopher may have been there.

Stowe said there is still no evidence to indicate a crime has been committed and the case is still being treated as a missing-person case.

Carol Dixon, Christopher's grandmother, said the family has contacted the nationally syndicated show "America's Most Wanted" and a national hot line for missing children.
    ***snip

She said Christopher is small for his age and looks more like a 10-year-old than a 13-year-old.

"He just wouldn't run away," she said.

    Default Search for missing teen

High Point police are still searching for missing 13 year old Chris Dixon. Meanwhile, his case is gaining national attention. Dixon's family has appeared on the Fox Newschannel. The family is also lining up interviews with CNN and "America's Most Wanted." Tuesday morning, Chris Dixon's mother pleaded for him to come home. She tearfully told him he will not be in any trouble. She also asked that if someone has Chris, to please return him unharmed. A mail carrier last saw the teenager on Thursday. Chris was running into the woods across the street from his house. Detectives say they've searched the area several times and haven't found any evidence that points towards someone abducting him. Police are treating the case officially as a missing persons, but they have established a special taskforce to work on the investigation. Police have also set up a tip line. If you have any information that can help find Chris Dixon, please call 336-887-7862.

    10/29/2002

    Associated Press

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- The family of a 13-year-old High Point boy missing since Thursday hopes a growing cash reward and national television exposure will lead to their son's safe return.

His parents say Christopher disappeared about 3:45 p.m. Thursday while bringing in garbage cans from the end of the driveway of his home after school.

More than $3,000 in donations for a reward fund have poured in already, Gentry said...snip

"We have finished our ground searches," said High Point police spokesman Lt. Jim Tate. "We're still handling this as a missing persons investigation. There's no physical evidence that shows an abduction."

Tate said police have asked the FBI for assistance.

Case is considered death investigation, site a crime scene

    By Patrick Wilson
    JOURNAL REPORTER

    HIGH POINT

The body of a 13-year-old boy missing since Oct. 24 was found yesterday morning under a bridge.

The discovery of Christopher Dixon came nine days after the boy was reported missing from his family's home at 2601 Gordon Road in northeast High Point. The site where the body was found is about a mile from the house, police said.

"The Dixon case is now being considered as a death investigation and the site where the body was found as a crime scene," said Lt. Jim Tate of the High Point Police Department.
    ***snip

High Point police asked the State Bureau of Investigation to help them examine the crime scene. An autopsy will be done today at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Chapel Hill.

Dixon's family moved from South Carolina to High Point about a month ago. The boy's relatives have said that Christopher went out to the road Oct.24 to pick up garbage cans. He never returned.
    ***snip

Police would not comment on the position or condition of the body, or how long it had been under the bridge.
    ***snip

Although police referred to the area where Dixon's body was found yesterday as a "crime scene," they did not say whether they believe that he was killed or died from an accident or natural causes.
    ***snip

High Point police are asking anyone with information about the case to call the department at 883-3224 or High Point CrimeStoppers at 889-4000.

    Staff/wire reports

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- Autopsy results on Christopher Dixon, a 13-year-old boy whose body was found under a bridge, revealed injuries consistent with a fall, police said Sunday.

High Point interim police chief Blair Rankin said the boy's death was ruled accidental.

The autopsy performed Sunday morning revealed spinal and chest injuries consistent with a fall, Rankin said.

Default Where was Christopher for 9 days and what is being done to find out?

It has now been over 6 months since Christopher's body was found and there have been no news updates. Why? Where was Christopher for those 9 days?

    *****
Christopher Dixon was last seen about 3:30 p.m. Thursday 24-Oct-2002 at 2601 Gordon Road. He had gone out to the road to pick up garbage cans, he brought them back to the house, and never came inside. Christopher was last seen wearing a blue button down shirt and blue pants.

The search for a missing 13-year-old ended 02-NOV-2002 when volunteers found his body under a busy overpass about a mile from his home.

Medical examiner rules out 'foul play' in Dixon's death

By: Kelly Kramp, STAFF WRITER November 04, 2002

The death of 13-year-old Christopher Dixon was ruled accidental Sunday after an autopsy indicated he died from a fall.
    ...snip

"It is the opinion of the medical examiner the death was instantaneous, and Chris did not suffer. There were no signs of trauma that would indicate any type of foul play or that Chris may have been involved in a traffic-related incident," Rankin said.

Christopher's body was found at 10:25 a.m. Saturday under the the Eastchester Drive bridge at the U.S. 311 Bypass, about one mile from the family's home at 2601 Gordon Road. The teen had been missing for nine days.

The examination, however, did not determine how long Christopher's body had been on the bypass.

"The weather conditions over the days that Chris was missing have played a significant role in not being able to determine the length of time the body was at the location," Rankin said.
    ...snip

Police also said Sunday that the area had been searched by at least four groups, including police officers and volunteers.
    ...snip

"We still have so many questions unanswered. We hope what they find in the next couple of days will give us a few more answers," said Laura Gentry, family spokeswoman. "There are questions that probably will never be answered."

Those questions include how Christopher stayed safe for nine days and how searchers did not find him earlier.
    ...snip

"Searchers were in the area. It was an open area. It's not like he was covered," Gentry said. "Searchers in the area would have seen him if he had been there all this time."
