Body found, may be Laci Peterson

POINT ISABEL - The dismembered body of a woman discovered this morning on the muddy bayshore could be that of Laci Denise Peterson, the pregnant woman who vanished from her Modesto home on Christmas Eve, a police source told the Times.

A tip from a citizen led police to the petite female body about 11:45 a.m., the source said on condition of anonymity. The head and legs were missing and it was apparent that she had been pregnant, the source said.

The body was clothed in maternity wear, the official said.

Police have not made a positive identification, but are pursuing the Peterson angle, the source said.

"We don't know for sure," the source said.

On Sunday, a tip led Richmond police to the body of a baby that had washed ashore near the Richmond marina. The body was discovered about 4:45 p.m. near Seabreeze Drive, police said.

The woman's torso was found less than two miles away from where dog walkers came across the body of a baby with its umbilical cord still attached. The body, found in the grass near the water, was badly decomposed.

The coroner's office said the newborn was a full-term baby boy.

Peterson, 26, was last seen alive about 9:30 a.m. Dec. 24 when her husband Scott Peterson left to go fishing in the Bay Area. He told police he tried to call his wife when he was done, but could not reach her.

He called police after returning home to find only the family dog with its leash still attached. Searches of a park near their home turned up no clues after Scott Peterson told police that was where his wife planned to take the family dog for a walk.

Police initially treated the disappearance as a missing persons case, but detectives reclassified the case as a homicide investigation in early March.

Investigators have repeatedly said they had no suspects, but Modesto police have searched Scott Peterson's home and vehicles and seized two family computers.

Suspicion among Modesto residents has focused on Scott Peterson, especially after he admitted having an affair with a Fresno massage therapist, Amber Frey. Laci Peterson's family disavowed support of her husband after the affair was revealed.

The investigation has ranged from the parks and canals of Modesto to the San Francisco Bay. Police searched the bay from the Berkeley Marina to Richmond and Angel Island, returning to Richmond last month to search the water with sonar and a remote-control underwater vehicle.

Last month, police searched the area where the baby's body washed ashore on Sunday. Authorities used sonar to comb the bottom of the bay, but failed to locate anything at that time.

    Bodies Found
Fetus, Adult Discovered Near Richmond Marina

Laci Peterson has been missing since Christmas Eve.
    (ABC7)
Apr. 14 — A body washed ashore today in Richmond after a full-term male fetus was found in the same area over the weekend. Now the Modesto Police, who are investigating the Laci Peterson disappearance, are being flown to the scene.

Richmond is about 75 miles away from Modesto, Calif., where Laci Peterson, 27, was about 7 ½ months pregnant when she disappeared last Christmas Eve.

Chief Norman Lapera, East Bay Regional Park Police: "What we have is we have a pretty badly decomposed body that appears to have been in the water for quite some time."

That body was discovered less than 18 hours after the discovery of another body — a baby that washed ashore.

Sgt. Enos Johnson, Richmond Police Dept.: "It was a full term, what I understand a full term fetus, and it was found on the shoreline approximately a mile or a mile and a quarter from here along the Richmond shoreline just across the bay here.

Question: "What condition was the fetus in?"

Sgt. Enos Johnson, Richmond Police Dept.: "The body was badly decomposed. They were, through an autopsy determined it was a boy, and also at this time they don't know what race the baby was."

East Bay Regional Park Police Chief Norman Lapera wouldn't get into any details about the adult body, its gender or condition except to say there was enough reason to contact Modesto Police because of the Laci Peterson case.

Chief Norman Lapera, East Bay Regional Park Police: "Anything regarding the gender right now would be conjecture, and we would wait until the coroner gets here for some person to make that determination. I think you can infer by the fact that we've called the Modesto Police Department that we have not eliminated the fact that it may be a female victim."

Laci Peterson disappeared from her Modesto home Christmas Eve. Her husband, Scott, who has not been named a suspect in her disappearance nor been ruled out, told police he was fishing from the Berkeley marina at the time his wife disappeared.

East Bay regional park police waited to bring in Modesto investigators by helicopter instead of processing the crime scene as they would under normal circumstances.

Chief Norman Lapera, East Bay Regional Park Police: "We are rather than processing the scene right now as we normally would where we'd call the coroner in, as a courtesy to Modesto police department we're waiting. As I mentioned before the tide is on the way out, so there's no danger that the any kind of evidence will be damaged by the water coming in."

Local police said it was still too early to tell the gender of the adult corpse, but said that reporters could infer that it was female, because the Modesto police had been notified.

Police have also contacted the man who sold Peterson the boat he said he used for fishing on the day his wife disappeared. Investigators asked the seller to look over the boat to see if anything was different about it. The seller said that he saw traces of cement on the boat that were not there when he turned it over to Peterson.

Scott Peterson has acknowledged he did have an affair before Laci disappeared, but maintains he did not hurt his wife.

Laci was due to give birth Feb. 10 to a son she had already named Connor.

Body Discovered; Modesto Police Airlifted To Richmond

    POSTED: 3:15 p.m. PDT April 14, 2003
    UPDATED: 4:48 p.m. PDT April 14, 2003

RICHMOND, Calif. -- Modesto investigators were airlifted to Richmond's Point Isabel Regional Park Monday after a badly decomposed female body was spotted in shallow water about half a mile from where the corpse of a male fetus was discovered on Sunday.

However, authorities would not speculate if the grisly discoveries had anything to do with missing Modesto schoolteacher Laci Peterson.

Regional Park Police Chief Morgan Lapera Talks About Body

"What we have is a badly decomposed body that appears to have been in the water for some time," said chief Norman Lapera, of the East Bay Regional Park Police. "But it's (been in the water) longer than a few days. The body shows just some skeleton remains, there is some flesh on the body."

Lapera said it was impossible to immediately know the gender of the body, but added "I think you can infer by the fact that we called the Modesto Police Department that we have not eliminated that it may be a female."

Hours later, the coroner's office confirmed to KTVU Channel 2 that the body was that of a female.

When asked directly whether the discovery had anything to do with Peterson, Lapera answered: "We don't know...It would be unreasonable for me to speculate, (but) that is the concern of everyone."

In a copyrighted story, the Contra Costa Times quoted a source as telling the paper that the head and legs of the body were missing and it was apparent that the corpse had been pregnant. The body was identified, according to the newspaper source, to be a petite female that apparently was clothed in maternity wear.

Once they were called, Modesto police immediately dispatched a team to the scene via a helicopter.

"Modesto investigators were very interested and appreciated the phone call," he said. "Rather than processing the crime right now, where we would call in the coroner, as a courtesy to the Modesto Police, we are waiting for them."

"There is no danger of any kind of evidence being damaged because the tide is out. We have some time and the coroner is waiting."

    *snip*

Speculation that the discovery could be a major break in the Peterson case arose from the fact that Scott Peterson, Laci's husband, has told authorities he was fishing in the nearby Berkeley Marina on Christmas Eve day when his wife allegedly disappeared without a trace from their Modesto home. The waters off Berkeley and Richmond have been the sites of an intensive underwater search.

Laci Peterson also was eight months pregnant with a baby boy at the time of her disappearance. Authorities said the fetus discovered along the shoreline on Sunday was that of a late-term baby boy.

Unhappy Praying for these two souls

Probably Laci and Conner, they have come home from their watery grave to prove their murders. If it is not them, the story gets a little sadder knowing that another mother and child did not get to go through this life together hand in hand.

Body found along Richmond shoreline; Modesto police called

Modesto police investigators have arrived by helicopter to a shoreline park in Richmond where a decomposed body was found today.

East Bay Regional Park District Police Chief Norman Lapera said officers were called to Point Isabel at 11:43 a.m. when a person walking a dog made the grisly find.

"We have a pretty badly decomposed body that appears to have been in the water for quite some time,'' Lapera said.

He said the remains were mostly skeletal. The sex of the body has not been determined.

"I think you can infer by the fact that we've called the Modesto Police Department that we have not eliminated the fact that it may be a female victim,'' Lapera said.

Because of previous searches conducted in the area for missing pregnant woman Laci Peterson, Lapera said they notified Modesto police about the body. Peterson, a woman in her eighth month of pregnancy, was last seen in her hometown of Modesto on Christmas Eve.

A park district helicopter was dispatched to Modesto to pick up investigators who landed in a parking lot at the park around 3:20 p.m.

It is not clear if today's discovery is connected to Sunday's find of a full-term fetus on the Richmond shoreline about a mile north of where the body was found.

Richmond Police Sgt. Enos Johnson said the male fetus of an unknown race was also badly decomposed when it was found around 5 p.m. near Seabreeze Drive. The cause of death is also unknown.

Police have shut down the area, which is a popular dog-walking park.

Forensics should be able to get DNA from the remains. Let's hope that there is enough trace evidence to put the murderer under the needle.

Police check found body for Peterson connection

    http://www.modbee.com/reports/laci/s...-7496103c.html

    Published: April 14, 2003, 05:10:30 PM PDT

Investigators are trying to determine if two bodies found in the East Bay Area in the last two days are connected to the Laci Peterson investigation.
East Bay Regional Park police contacted Modesto police after a body was discovered near the Point Isabel Regional Shoreline Monday. Jimmy Lee, spokesman for the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department, said he was told the body belonged to an adult female.

Sunday, the Richmond Police Department responded to a discovery by two people walking their dog, a dispatcher with the Richmond Police said. Those people found a "full-term male child," Lee said.

The baby was found about a mile north from where the adult body was discovered Monday. The infant’s body was described as badly decomposed.

Lee said the coroner’s office conducted an autopsy on the baby’s body this morning, but had not determined the cause of death. He said several tests were run on the body; results could take weeks.

Peterson, 27, was about eight months pregnant when she was reported missing on Christmas Eve. Police recently classified the case a homicide.

Peterson's husband, Scott Peterson, told police he went fishing at the Berkeley Marina and could not find his wife when he returned. Monday's discovery was just north of the Berkeley Marina, Lee said. Police have not named Scott Peterson as a suspect in the case, nor has he been cleared.

Monday afternoon, Scott Peterson’s mother, Jackie Peterson, said she called Modesto police after she heard media reports about today’s discovery, and police told her what they knew. Police had not yet arrived in Richmond, so what they told Peterson had not been confirmed. Peterson said she called her son to tell him. "We’re praying that it’s not Laci," she said.

"We of course feel bad for whoever it is," Peterson said by telephone from her home in San Diego County. "We pray for Laci’s sake, because we still don’t want to give up."

Laci Peterson’s family said police had not contacted them Monday afternoon, and they were awaiting word on the investigation. See the full story in tomorrow’s Bee or www.modbee.com.

I am sure Scott Peterson rushed to the site, demanding answers. Demanding to know if this was his missing wife and son.

I bet Scott hasn't left the police station. In fact they probably had to threaten him with jail if Scott didn't stop demanding to know what is going on....

Yeah Right....Peterson is probably cowering under his mommy's bed screaming: "Made those bad police go away"

You know any minute Skank will start a Scott Peterson forum.

I'll never forget the site of the arrogant, smiling Scott Peterson announcing that he had spoken with Marc Klaas about his case. It would have been funny if it hadn't been so serious when Marc Klaas came on and announced he had never spoken to Scott Peterson.

This to me shows what a sociopath Scott is. He lies. He is so desperate he lies without thinking how easy it is to expose his lies.

Post Don't get your hopes up

They may not find anything to trace the murder back to Scott. They need to find the place where he cut her, but they've had months to do that and have found nothing so far.

Let's see now, Scott says he went fishing at the Berkeley Marina. These bodies wash up in the East Bay Area near the Berkeley Marina.

A full-term male child was found on Sunday. On Monday, an adult body perhaps female but allegedly wearing maternity clothes was found about a mile north of where the baby was found.

Scott's missing a wife (female) who was 8 1/2 months pregnant and it had been confirmed that the child was a boy.

This isn't rocket science Scott. If you did it you might want to confess and start that plea bargain now. We do have to presume innocence until guilt is proven in a court of law but it isn't looking very good for you right now.

I believe recent articles (I might be wrong - this may have been the Globe) have indicated the home is a crime scene because Laci's blood was found there. I also believe it was presumed she had been hit but now it looks like she was more than hit, if this is Laci. I do know recent articles indicate the LE enforcement believe Laci was the victim of a violent crime.

Forensics will be able to tell how those limbs went missing. People can clean up but they usually don't do the job quite good enough and that is how they get caught.
