Default Comic book creator plans to highlight missing 9-year-old boy

    THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

An activist and comic book creator - working to bring attention to cases of missing black children - said Monday he will include in his work a severely disabled, 9-year-old boy who vanished.

Alonzo Washington, of Kansas City, plans to highlight Christian Ferguson, a missing St. Louis-area boy, on his Web site and in his work. He said cases involving minority children do not receive the same type of widespread publicity as cases involving white children.

"There's nothing new to report, and God knows I wish there was," said Don Wilson, Christian's second cousin.

He said volunteers have begun working at night, after work, and he said there's a core group of six to eight people looking for some sign of Christian.
    ...snip

He said he felt police were doing everything they could to resolve the case. St. Louis police spokesman Richard Wilkes said the department had no new developments.

Washington came to St. Louis on Monday to talk about the $5 comic book and free trading cards he's distributing to spread the word about missing black children.

In his comic book, superhero Omega Man stands among illustrations of missing children. On trading cards, he offers children tips on how to stay safe. He sells his work in stores and online.

The father of seven children, Washington, 35, began creating comics 10 years ago. He started working two years ago to profile missing black boys and girls.

Default Bench Message Hoped to Bring Home Missing Children

    7/14/2003 4:53:09 PM

(KSDK) Sunday, an unassuming bench at the Buy-Rite IGA Grocery Store in Lake St. Louis was dedicated. It's hoped the small seat will have a big impact by helping bring missing children home.

It's just the first bench of many, part of a program called "Sitting With An Angel." And whether you sit, stop, or just see it, the families hope it will help you remember that there's a missing child out there that needs to be found.

They say when a child first disappears, help appears quickly. But later, families say the public has a tendency to forget. That's why they're coming up with new and creative ways to keep the kids pictures in the public eye. Long ago, the pictures went on milk cartons. Now the benches are a modern update to that concept.

A local company, Creative Placard Ads, is featuring a different child on each bench. They'll be placed throughout Missouri and Illinois. The first is Heather Kullorn, who disappeared from a Richmond Heights home four years ago.
    ...snip

Another bench will be dedicated to Christian Ferguson of Pine Lawn who has been gone for a month. His picture is already being featured in a comic book. Craig Akers, of the Shawn Hornbeck Foundation says, "pretty much any idea you have that keeps the information out there is a great idea."

If you have information, or need information about any of these kids, call the Shawn Hornbeck Foundation at 866-400-5353. The benches for Shawn and for Christian Ferguson will go up in Fenton and in Maryland Heights in the next few weeks.

Default Bench Dedicated To Search for Christian Ferguson

Bench Dedicated To Search for Christian Ferguson
    7/25/2003 8:30:10 AM

(KSDK) It's hoped a new bus bench might jog someone's memory and bring a child missing since early June. The newest "Sitting With An Angel" bench, featuring Chrisitian Ferguson was dedicated Thursday.

The disabled nine-year old has been missing since June. His father says the boy was inside his SUV when it was carjacked. The vehicle was found. Christian was not.

The bench, and several others also showing our area's missing children, were made possible by the Shawn Hornbeck Foundation and Creative Placard Ads.

Default Comic Book Features Missing Children

    7/29/2003 4:04:00 PM

(KSDK) Those looking for a missing Christian Ferguson, 9, hope a new comic book will help.

Creator Alonzo Washington released his new comic book Tuesday at Topaz Books in East St. Louis.

Called "America's Forgotten Children", it features several missing children, including Ferguson, who disappeared in June.

His father claims his SUV was carjacked with Christian inside.

Washington is also printing trading cards featuring Christian.

Default Case of missing boy continues to puzzle investigators

    By Jeremy Kohler
    Of the Post-Dispatch
    06/10/2004

    Christian Ferguson
    (P-D)

One year ago this morning, a father called 911 from a pay phone with a frightening account: A carjacker had driven away with his SUV and his diaper-clad, profoundly disabled 9-year-old son.

The SUV turned up two hours later; there was no sign of the boy.

St. Louisans, reeling from a relentless series of highly publicized child abductions, felt another shiver. City police were skeptical of the carjacking report but said the danger to the boy was no less real.

Searchers fanned out in a race to find Christian Taylor Ferguson. Without medicine for a metabolic defect, they were told, he would soon be dead. Days later, he was presumed so. But hope remained that authorities would at least find his remains and learn his fate.

Another June 11 has arrived and Christian remains missing; his disappearance remains unsolved.

But from the very start, investigators have - in their actions, if not in their words - put the microscope on his father, Dawan Ferguson, 31, who had been embroiled with his ex-wife, Christian's mother, in a custody battle over their two sons.

Ferguson has not been charged with a crime; he declined through his lawyer, John Rogers of Clayton, to comment for this story.
    ...snip

The scrutiny on Dawan Ferguson started with his 911 call at 6:09 a.m. from a parking lot at Page and Skinker boulevards.

A resident of a cul-de-sac in Ferguson - about five miles from Page and Skinker - later told police she had seen the SUV there about the same time as that 911 call. Only one of those statements could have been true; police were skeptical of Dawan Ferguson's account.
    ...snip

"Well, let's put it this way," Hegger said. "Let me rephrase this: There's inconsistencies that were learned early in the investigation that open a door for looking at all aspects. You're looking at everything - what his story was, what we learned from the community, what we learned from everybody associated with the family, eyewitnesses - everything."

The mystery deepened when St. Louis police took note of something on a TV news tape made shortly after the 911 report. A car parked on a lot at the scene, at Page and Skinker, belonged to a close friend of Dawan Ferguson's. It was a friend who lived only about four blocks from that cul-de-sac where Ferguson's vehicle was recovered.

Detectives have twice searched for evidence in Ferguson's rented home in Pine Lawn.

The first time, they examined the house the day Christian was reported missing. That same day, Dawan Ferguson cut short a police interview and said he would no longer cooperate with authorities, a stance that has not changed.

Ferguson, a bounty hunter, later arranged for private detectives to scour the home and remove anything that appeared to have value as evidence, court records and Rogers confirmed.

Police believe that Ferguson and his current wife, Monica, moved from the house on Sylvan Place the week that Christian disappeared. Ferguson later told his landlady to bar police from returning to search it again, court records show. But she gave officers permission anyway.
    ...snip

Details of the custody battle between Dawan and Theda Ferguson are in a sealed court file, but what is known is that the court awarded custody of their other son, Connor, now 9, to Dawan Ferguson's parents.

Despite the passage of a year, police continue to investigate Christian's disappearance.

"We didn't walk away from it," Hegger said. "It's still being actively worked. I imagine in the near future there will be some solution to it, some conclusion to it."

A balloon launching and memorial service for Christian will be 6:30 tonight at St. Simon of Cyrene Catholic Church, 5050 Thekla Avenue, St. Louis.

It has been three years since Christian Ferguson was allegedly kidnapped when his father's car was stolen. The car was found two hours later but Christian was not in it. Christian had a severe medical condition which required a special diet and daily medication that was not with him. Christian was 9 years old when he disappeared. His father quit talking to the police fairly quickly.

My guess is that sometime between 4 a.m. (when Dawan Ferguson left the house with Christian) and 6 a.m. (when the reported car jacking occurred) is when the child was killed and the body disposed. Dawan Ferguson is lying out of his a$$!
