Attorney's showy style is made to odor

If there's one thing Darnay Hoffman knows about, it's how to attract attention

When the lawyer came to collect Joel Steinberg from prison yesterday, he arrived in a white stretch limousine.

His list of clients has included subway vigilante Bernhard Goetz and Jon Benet Ramsey's nanny.

His personal life was equally notorious

One of Hoffman's ex-wives got a court order in 1989 to bounce him from their apartment because he smelled
"I was always surprised when he turned out to be a lawyer," said retired state Supreme Court Justice Walter Schackman, the judge who issued the famous stench order. "He was kind of an oddball".

But his reputed odor or oddness did not stop the former Mayflower Madam Sidney Biddle Barrows from marrying Hoffman in 1994.

His offbeat reputation, and the fact he switched careers from television producer to lawyer, prompted subway gunman Goetz to hire the newly minted lawyer to handle his $50 million civil suit. Goetz didn't trust lawyers so Hoffman was a perfect choice.

It was the second trial of Hoffman's legal career. He lost.

"Darnay was and is such an amazingly bad lawyer, and he's never bothered to get better" said Ron Kuby, Hoffman's courtroom rival in the 1996 civil trial.

The Bronx jury sided with Kuby's client and found Goetz liable for $43 million in connection with the fateful 1984 subway shooting.

But the case gave Hoffman lasting notoriety, which was only enhanced yesterday as the lawyer escorted Steinberg through the media horde.

Hoffman's relationship with Steinberg dates to the 1970's when he credits Steinberg with convincing one of his ex-wives to delay getting a divorce.

"He always used to say that he and Joel Steinberg had been close friends, before Steinberg adopted the little girl," said one of Hoffman's former mothers-in-law, Constance Sheppard. "How outrageous to have him for a client!"

Kuby agreed.

"The thing now is, Joel Steinberg is out of jail and doesn't need a lawyer", Kuby said, "so Darnay Hoffman is perfectly suited for the job".

Just had to add: I checked and it's amazing that this post has not found its way to Cybersleuths.

It has found its way to the swamp and interestingly, Jameson has not commented.

But you know her, she loves those baby killers and seemingly, so does Candy.

I have never been more proud of you.

Free - do not miss the thread at CS in the All Criminal Cases forum. For some reason, Darnay Hoffman news is no longer "Case related" so it's not in the JonBenet forum.

This recent experience with Steinberg's release and the people that support him - people that we have to directly deal with - they know who they are - has skaken me in a bad way. Pure Disgust kind of covers how I am feeling. The only that that could probably break me out of this low point is if Fleet decided to run against Keenan.

Or better yet.....Priscilla.

The fact that Darnay is an amazingly incompetent lawyer should come as no surprise to anyone, given the way he totally compromised the JBR case by his handling of the Wolf case. Everything Wood and Keenan have done since the judge rendered her decision has been based on the result of that case - IOW, the buck stops with Darnay. Some may give him a pass, but I won't. He opened the door to the travesty that is going on in Boulder right now.

Of course, there will always be groupees who follow people like Darnay around, hoping to attach themselves to a vacant place on his ample behind.

"....Victor Malavet, who was doing five years for robbery, finally had summoned up the nerve to ask Steinberg how he could have beaten his 6-year-old adopted daughter to death.

"Let me ask you a question," Malavet said. "Between you and me, why did you do it?"

Steinberg usually averted his eyes when he spoke to the other prisoners. But this time he stared Malavet right in the face and spoke these words:

"Nobody knew what a f------ brat that little girl was."

For two years, Malavet kept Steinberg's words to himself - but decided to come forward yesterday after seeing the child killer free.

Malavet had done hard time more than once and had violence in his past, but he said he still remembers how stunned and enraged he was by Steinberg's unrepentant response.

"It took a lot for me not to put my hands around him and choke the guy." the Bronx man told the Daily News yesterday.

When he heard Steinberg had been paroled from prison this week, Malavet said he felt the same disbelief and fury all over again.

"He was lucky that day, but now I want everyone to know about him," he said.

The two saw each other in the gym, the mess hall and the yard, and Malavet wrote about Steinberg in a jailhouse diary.

"Every time I see him, I want to ram my fist into his ugly mug." Malavet wrote in a May 27, 2002 entry. "I want to make him feel pain and humiliation"

Other prisoners felt the same way and called Steinberg "The cockroach" but no one wanted to jeopardize release by acting on the anger, Malavet said.

"Steinberg is a real piece of s---, " Malavet wrote. "And he walks around here like he is the cat's meow"

"He never looked people in the eye. He's got squirrely eyes. But he looked right at me when he said those words," Malavet said. "Then he just walked away".

"I've thought about why he said it. I think he wanted me to pass it on, so guys would look at him different. It was like he wanted us to think it was justified" he said.

If so, it didn't work.

Inmates continued to call Steinberg a roach and shun him, except when they needed legal advice, Malavet said.

"He was always looking scared, like someone would hurt him because of what he did," Malavet said. "If I could have got away with it, I would have hurt him".

Now that Steinberg is back on the city streets, Malavet - who was released from prison last year - wants to make sure no one thinks the man has atoned for his crimes.

"This is my way of telling people he should...rot in jail", he said. Sixteen years is not enough for a life, especially not an angel".

New York loves Steinberg soooooooo much...the city would like to give Steinberg a New York limo ride...attached to the bumper going 90 miles an hour on a rusty nail, razor blade and glass shard encrusted mogul road. Course need to stop every 5 minutes and wash his wounds with salt water.

This news burns me up...Steinberg free, little Lisa's life worth only a few years in prison.

And Darnay proud of his bestest buddy. Gag...the very thought of Darnay makes me want to vomit. I thought Geragos was the biggest, sleaziest lawyer I knew, but Darnay takes the cake!
