After 10 Years, Ramsey Case Still Stumps the Experts

Though Mr. Schiller's program treats the case as nothing but cold, the documentary suggests that, in the stirring phrase, "new evidence has come to light," and its central questions seem perpetually on the brink of being answered. Mr. Schiller has assembled a gang of police officers and prosecutors, and they're still an exhaustively stumped bunch. Who can blame them? Clearly they were interviewed before Patsy Ramsey's death, and their response to that death might make a useful addition to the program. But it's also interesting simply to observe so many successful midcareer professionals whose authority and problem-solving capacities have been so publicly and irrevocably confounded. There's Alex Hunter, the embattled Boulder district attorney; Mark Beckner, who replaced John Eller as the lead investigator; and Lou Smit, the supposedly infallible Colorado Springs police investigator who was brought to Boulder to show everyone the truth and the way.

All of these, and Mr. Schiller himself, got lost in the murk. Even the real heavy hitters, the "dream team" task force that Mr. Hunter assembled late in the game, couldn't make the thousands of crime-scene pieces fit. And that's where the case seems to have broader implications for forensics. And even empiricism itself. It sometimes seems that the closer and harder one looks at the material world, the fewer answers it provides.

One of the few interviews on tv I've heard was a telephone interview with Greta Van S(omething); it was the day Patsy died. She said the case was cold from the time it happened. Additionally, she'd changed her mind over the years about the parents being involved. The case she compared it to was Elizabeth Smart.
