Legal and law enforcement experts have begun to express outward skepticism about claims by a teacher that he killed JonBenet Ramsey.
John Mark Karr told reporters in a press conference last night in Thailand he was with the 6-year-old beauty queen when she died nearly 10 years ago. He said the death was accidental, as part of a botched kidnapping effort. When asked how he entered the family’s Boulder home, he declined to comment.

But investigators in Thailand have told the Associated Press that Karr has made several other statements to them, including claims that he picked JonBenet up from school the day she was killed and that he drugged her. JonBenet was on Christmas vacation at the time, so school was not in session, and there was no evidence of drugs found in JonBenet’s body during the autopsy.

So far, there is no paper trail of Karr being in Colorado. Police in Boulder said today that they have no record of ever having contact with him.

Denver defense lawyer Larry Pozner said Karr's news conference confession, televised late last night, was bizarre.

"Is this just an obsessive guy craving his 15 minutes of fame? There are those people who confess under circumstances where we immediately know, this is real. This isn’t one of them," Pozner said. "We have to withhold judgment because he has not given enough facts for us to decide: Do we have a wack-job or a murderer?"

Denver lawyer and former prosecutor Craig Silverman expressed similar reservations.

"This confession is nonsensical and it appears to be delusional. To claim this was an accident is ridiculous. It's hard to imagine a more intentional, deliberate murder than hitting a girl with sufficient force to split her skull open and to fashion a garrote and twist it until she stops breathing."

A former investigator knowledgeable about the case watched a press conference by Boulder District Attorney Mary Lacy this morning and said he was concerned about what she said - and didn’t say.

"Her statements about, 'I wish that we could have continued (the investigation) in this vein, rather than in the public eye,' I agree with her in that regard. Because, for her sake, I hate to predict what’s going to come down if this whole things falls apart and they drag a guy 12,000 miles back from Bangkok only to get his 15 minutes of fame and a free ticket back to America."

Mr. Pozner, on the record, I am casting my vote for wack-job to include not only Karr but Tracy, Smit and Keenan-Lacy.

How the hell much money is THIS fiasco costing American citizens??????

Well in fairness to Keenan--if somebody confesses to this murder, she has to investigate it. This all smells like it was a concocted media "event"--but who stands to gain from it?

I agree BobC... I think Lin Wood and Tracy did their usual "thing." This guy is nothing more than a nut case - he and the DA made the mistake of trusting someone who is addicted to the "limelight."

OTOH, the DA's Office had so many bit players involved, no way the story was not getting to the media.

    Here's what I think happened.

Karr has been corresponding with Tracey about his obsession with JonBenet, going deeper and deeper into his fantasy of being with her "when she died." (Notice Karr said he was with JonBenet when she died, not that he killed her. Linguistically, he is using the passive voice, not active voice that would denote force of action.)

Then Tracey gets an e-mail he thinks has enough potential to get Keenan involved. He sends it to her, and they start tracking Karr (before Patsy dies so she knows about it - think of it as their final gift to Patsy). They find him in Thailand, and alert the Thai police to pick him up so they can bring him back here for questioning.

The Thai police knock on his door, tell him why they're there (no Miranda rights in Thailand), and he starts telling them he and JonBenet "loved each other", she was "his beauty queen," he was with her "when she died," etc. The Thai police can't believe what they've got!

Karr insists on confessing, so the Thai authorities call a press conference and let Karr tell his story. It starts to get more and more bizarre. Keenan can't believe the Thai police let Karr confess on international TV. Karr is starting to sound like a mental case, but the snowball is starting to roll downhill and Keenan can't stop it. The media has got a whiff of the story (probably thanks to Lin Wood and/or Michael Tracey), and now, it's a feeding frenzy.

Keenan doesn't have her ducks in a row yet, but there's no time for that now. The penny has dropped, and she has to play it out, all the while cautioning that Karr is innocent until proven guilty.

After Karr is let go and the dust clears, you watch. We'll get a lecture from Keenan on the rush to judgement and how SHE never said Karr was guilty.

The same question I've been asking myself - "who stands to gain from it?"
Could it be that John Ramsey benefits? If the DA is discredited in this fiasco, doesn't that make it nearly impossible for her to charge anyone else in the future, including John?

    I see Digger isn't fooled:

"But what real evidence is there -- that has been released -- that John Karr, a man who seems unknown to John Ramsey the father of JonBenet, actually committed the crime? There is absolutely none!"

I think Cherokee is right on the money....the man's family said he was with them, in Alabama the night of the murder and his father stated the man had never been to Colorado.

RST probably needed someone to take the rap (maybe John wants to run for office again or marry) and heck this guy is an apparent pedophile possibly a murderer...John and Patsy have a neat convient suspect for the LE. But will the LE buy it?

Who stands to gain from this?

    Everyone on the RST

Let's not forget folks. The cash cow has dried up somewhat regarding JBR. Now that Burke is a legal adult, lawsuits for him have dried up

The case was old and interest has waned. Tracey is writing a documentary, Jameson is writing a play, Lou Smit is accepting donations and............

    PATSY HAS JUST DIED.

A great cocktail for renewed interest and sympathy, playing on the "too bad Patsy isn't alive to see this" crap and there is a lot of money to be made

THAT is who stands to gain

    John can write another book

    Tracey can sell his crap

Jameson can sell her play and other materials; did anyone notice the new "join for $50 dollars" campaign that came out THIS MORNING?????

It's all about them, them, them $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Edited to add: Jameson has also begun re hawking her play again TODAY

The list is endless for a lot of money for a good amount of time until interest by the general public wanes again

Jams hawking her play? How disgusting....

The 50 buck sign up.... Jams hears the cash cow cometh. Hir's gotta make hay while the sun shines and quickly too before this suspect is released.

I think child porn stands to gain from this. They've been showing JBR in the feather outfit strutin' her six-year-old self all day long. The guy who wrote Presumed Guilty was on CNN today; I've never read it. But they said it was pro-Ramsey; the author was into porn, said he'd looked at all sorts of child porn pictures on the internet; his idea was the murder had something to do with child porn I'm thinking; he profiled JBR's killer, and Karr in fits his profile. I don't forget that jameson was into porn, and I think Tracey and jameson are tight. For Karr to have been attracted to Tracey, I'm thinking he is into it too. I don't know how it's all connected.

MSNBC said they first got the tip that Karr was arrested from John Ramsey. This media hoopla was all planned imho.

What John Ramsey did is despicable.

He hung Karr out to dry knowing how the media would pounce and the American public would buy it hook, line and sinker.

I think Ramsey grew tired of Keenan beating around the bush with Karr, and he decided to take matters into his own hands. It's obvious from what Keenan said that she wasn't ready for Karr to become public knowledge just yet.

Patsy's dead, John's ready to move on with his life. Let's throw someone under the bus, most people won't read the back page when charges are dropped and the confession is retracted. And even IF people figure out Karr is a nutjob, the damage is done. Now most people think there is enough "intruder" evidence to get someone arrested with it instead of knowing the real evidence points to the parents.

Well done, John, well done. You are an evil man.

Ha ha. The tide is turning!

This morning, a CNN poll showed 58% thought John Karr was the intruder and 42% didn't.

Just now, a differently worded poll asking if John Karr was a publicity seeker or a prime suspect showed 82% believe him a publicity seeker with only 28% considering him a prime suspect.

That guy was Stephen Singular, and yes, he's creepy. All that "research" on kiddie porn and autoerotic asphyxiation. jameson did the same kind of "research", and allowed the known international pedophile "Bluefire" to post long treatises on her site about sex with children. (Misty and I reported Bluefire to ICE. They said he was located in South America.) Karr says he taught in S. America on that long resume posted everywhere.

Cherokee, Lacy's case is unravelling faster than a ball of yarn in a room full of Siamese cats.

Lurker, how come the cats are Siamese but the police are Thai?
    Good pun there, 14!

Yesterday I said this wouldn't last two days, and today I'm thinking that this is an outside estimate. Greta Van Susteren has Trip DeMuth and Bob Grant on, and she just looked at them and said (re Lacey): "I think she's been had."

DeMuth flat out agreed, and Bob Grant allowed that he's seen these types before.

It's a great big prank by somebody. Let's use it for good and get the case reinvestigated.
