    Massive Prosecutorial Incompetence?

Boulder Than They Ought to Be

It has to be the thin air in Colorado making those cops and prosecutors arrogant and snub-nosed. Because as the facts emerge, not about who murdered JBR, but how this tight-lipped group of prosecutors and investigators has proceeded to investigate John Karr. When all is said and done, I think you’ll see there is a terrible disregard here for even street common sense.

Reportedly, it wasn’t until Wednesday morning, after Johnny Boy Karr was in Thai custody on a warrant from California, that someone with a badge from Boulder, Colorado, called the Marion County School District in Hamilton, Alabama, where Karr once taught, to ask for a sample of Karr’s handwriting to compare to the infamous ransom note left inside the Ramsey mansion by JBR’s killer.

That means Mary Lacy and her posse are not basing their case on a handwriting match. That much is clear form this behavior.

    But there’s more—much more.

If that wasn’t bad enough, Mary Lacy’s office hasn’t contacted the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to initiate a comparison check of DNA, handwriting, fingerprints, footprints, or the shoe and hand size of Mister Rogers-Karr to the evidence found at the murder scene. On top of that, I also heard from a trusted source that the DA’s office haven’t even spoken to “education officials†in Colorado or California to learn more about Karr’s history as a teacher there.

As Crime Rant reported on Friday, Karr’s ex-wife, Lara Knutson (we had that spelling wrong first time out) and Karr’s kids haven’t yet been interviewed regarding Karr’s whereabouts at the time of JBR’s murder.

Here’s another anomaly (and this one really tells me a lot about the case against Karr): the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department in California, which issued the initial “fugitive warrant†against Karr in 2001, charging him with “five counts of misdemeanor possession of child pornography,†said they were “unaware†of Karr’s possible connection to the Ramsey case until after he was in Thai custody.

Let me translate that into English: they saw it on television like the rest of us. In other words, not a soul from Boulder contacted Sonoma County before arresting Karr.

Does that make any sense whatsoever?

At a news conference last Thursday, a stoic Mary Lacy, quite conceited and haughty in her demeanor if you ask me, but also looking very scared and confused, playing the tough-gal prosecutor role not all that well, said “exigent circumstances forced the arrest of Mr. Karr.†Her office would have preferred to arrest him later. She did not talk about any of the evidence she has that ties Karr to JBR’s murder, simply because her office is in the process, obviously, of getting that evidence together now—if it exists at all.

Now, an investigator from Lacy’s office was sent to Thailand before Karr was brought in by Thai authorities. So the report that Karr “knows things about the crime scene†could still be true. But is Mary Lacy’s lawman, undoubtedly as tight-lipped as anyone else in her office, going to blab from the other side of the world about what Karr has told him? I think not. More like, if he told someone in his office and they told someone, who then told someone … you get the idea. But, my good friends, that is third, fourth and fifth party material. And it doesn’t wash with me. I tend to believe people stepped on it like dope and the organicness of it all is gone.

Former Denver prosecutor Craig Silverman said something very interesting to the Denver Post this morning, and it’sworth repeating: “You must conclude either Mary Lacy has solid, conclusive evidence—or this is massive prosecutorial incompetence.â€
