I got my November Vanity Fair on Friday but didn't get a chance to read it until last night.

Dominick Dunne's column is about the John Mark Karr fiasco. He writes that he knew that Karr wasn't guilty of anything when he first saw him - he says it looked to him like Karr was as happy as he had ever been when the press were surrounding him in Thailand.

Regarding John and Miss West Virginia, he nearly flat-out states that he thinks they did it. He was on the board of a national missing/murdered children organization for a long time, because of the murder of his daughter, and knows how you behave when something like this happens. He writes that the Rs hired a bunch of lawyers and a publicist right after the murder and didn't talk to the police for four months after JonBenet was killed. TO him, this is evidence of guilt.

Well, at least somebody's making sense in the national media. I wonder if Dunne has been talking to anyone we know...

The column's not available online yet. But George Clooney is on the cover, girls, so you'll want to get it anyway!!

OMG - and Clooney, too! I will be picking this up now and be able to tell the checkout girl that I am only buying it to read the articles.....

Only bad part is that we have to listen to all that huffing and puffing from the Freak Show Side of the Fence now that Dunne has done it again. Gotta love that man. Gotta.

I always thought it was a fluff magazine. I guess it's not, eh? They did an amazing job in the previous article about the case, and I will definitely look at this one too.

    From the Drudge report:

ABC TAKES KARR BACK TO THE SCHOOLHOUSE
    Sun Oct 08 2006 18:53:42 ET

San Francisco police say they stopped a limo carrying John Karr after the one-time JonBenet Ramsey suspect was spotted wandering near a school and peering in a window!

The AP reported this weekend: Police say the received a call from the Convent of the Sacred Heart school, where Karr worked briefly as a teacher's aide in 2000. School employees told police the limo carrying Karr and two producers for ABC's "Good Morning America," stopped near the school. Karr got out, strolled the sidewalk and approached the school's door.

Police say no laws were broken, but they did take the names of Karr and the producers.Karr was released from jail Thursday after Sonoma County authorities lost critical evidence in a five-year-old child pornography case against him and it was dismissed.

UPATE: ABC canceled a planned interview with Karr on Friday after he jumped out of the car at the school. "Our producers were quite disturbed by his behavior. No sweeps special. No interview."

    Developing...

    Wombat,

Did you ever read Dominick Dunne's book "Justice" Crimes, Trials and Punishments. An excellent book. He takes you right into the court room. A great writer!

I read all his books, I wuv him.

He was a big socialite in the 50s and 60s in Hollywood and knew everybody. He had to go away for a while because of self-abusive behavior, and during that time he became a writer.

He did a photo-essay book called "The Way We Lived Then" about his socialite times during the 60s. Fabulous!

I love Dunne and Vanity Fair, though as I've gotten older, VF has gotten younger. So to speak. The Tina Brown days as editor were the best, to me.

VF has always done the best print reporting on a variety of current news topics, plus they have a "society/celebrity" bent, as well. Remember that Anne Bardach wrote the now famous VF article on the JB murder that caused so much of an uproar in Boulder. The reporters are given the space to write 10,000 word articles, so they naturally have more opportunity to get the details. VF also has the best writers/reporters around.

I've been reading VF for about 15 years now, and Dunne is always a highlight. I have some of his books as well, including "The Way We Were," which I was reading just the other day, looking at the great pictures. Dunne's story is amazing.

Which is all by way of saying it's cheap to get it by subscription and it's always worth it. Whether you get to read the top interview with Jennifer Anniston after her breakup with Brad or the most in-depth article on the newlywed who fell off the cruise ship, they always have good stuff. Plus fashion, politics, international topics, even amazing reports on war and genocide in various areas of the world. It's really a great mag.

It was, in fact, in VF that I read many years ago about the kidnapping industry in third world countries. Wonder if Patsy read it.

Oh, and I must mention they work with the greatest photogs in the world. Particularly Annie Leboweitz. Whose name I can't spell.

You drive a seriously mentally ill man to a SCHOOL, who has written some of the most vile prose about molesting little girls most anyone but PEDOPHILES has ever seen...who has just gotten out of TWO close calls with being charged with a CHILD MURDER and POSSESSION OF CHILD PORN after 2 months in jail...and you are SURPRISED THAT HE DOES SOMETHING STUPID?

    :floor:

Right. I don't know who gave these two bozos from ABC the keys to the limo...but they should take them back and send them to their room for a week.

Well, KK, there's a picture in the new issue of Ms. Liebowitz naked as a jaybird, when she was pregnant with her baby at age 50 or something. Full side view. Not my idea of a mommy picture!!

It's okay, the Clooney pictures make up for it.

Can you tell me the previous article you are talking about. Is it the one from years ago?

Ann Bardach's article shook up the DA's office and got Steve Thomas fired for saying this:

"The Ramseys' best defense attorneys are right inside Hunter's office," he mumbled bitterly.

From the same article referring to Hunter's cooperation with Haddon:

"The sharing of such information, says famed 25-year F.B.I. veteran Gregg McCrary, "is unprecedented and unprofessional
and an obstruction of justice It's criminal.... It's possible you
could make a case for prosecutorial malfeasance It completely
    compromises the investigation."

Ann Bardach was full of herself and blantently used people; but she wrote a story that stands up to this day.

Do you mean everyone knew about the fix? or they just didn't want to believe it? Is Steve the ONLY one who wanted to expose what was going on?

Could another GJ be held with the corruption in Boulder?

Spade, whatever you were told, I don't believe for one minute that Thomas would have been "allowed" to resign, as in , either resign or you're fired.

Think about it. The publicity would have been HUGE. The case was already hanging on by threads. If they'd FIRED Thomas, he'd not only have had instant publicity the world over, but the case would have been compromised BEYOND any PRETENSE of taking it to trial in that action alone. What defense wouldn't have exploited THAT?

Unless you're saying Hunter already didn't care if his little secret OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE behaviors were made public, out and out. Thomas could have RUINED Hunter pronto. He could have taken the publicity tour and blown them ALL out of the water.

Remember that HUNTER was not only FEEDING THE TABS, but Thomas caught that tab reporter on TAPE admitting it. Then that tape was DESTROYED by the DA SUCKER chief of police, but Thomas already knew the truth. If there was a reason Hunter wanted Thomas out, that was it. But if Thomas was FORCED to leave, it was a done deal that this would be made public.

No, Spade, I'm not buying it. I think your source either bought a bill of goods himself, or he is feeding you one.

When Hunter was already supplying the tabs with info, at best Thomas was doing the same with Bardach. Smit literally openly blackmailed Hunter in court to get not only his own COPIES of various CASE EVIDENCE THAT BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE OF COLORADO, but legal permission to do anything he wanted with it, as well as the right to appear before the grand jury and TANK THE CASE FOREVER. Smit said STRAIGHT UP in his filed court response to Hunter's plea for the copies of the evidence to be returned that HE WOULD NOT ONLY REVEAL THAT HUNTER LEAKED TO THE PRESS, BUT EVEN MORE OF WHAT SMIT HAD SEEN/HEARD IN THE DA'S OFFICE.

Think about that. SMIT WAS A MOLE ALL ALONG. Sorry ***.

I'm sure that Hunter and Beckner and the Ramseys/Wood want everyone to believe that somehow, Thomas was THE LEAK in this pathetic saga, but I don't think so....

No, Hunter and the Ramseys manipulated the press from THE DAY AFTER JONBENET WAS BURIED. Smit and Hunter were a TREMENDOUS help in that. Hunter was leaking to the tabs, which he eventually admitted. Smit has handed out MORE of the evidence to the press in this case than everyone else PUT TOGETHER. He's gotten it ALL OVER EVERY NEWS CHANNEL, TALK SHOW, AND CROCUMENTARY that's come down the pike in the last decade.

I have no doubt that Hunter wanted Thomas out of there, though. Hunter was dealing under the table and Thomas caught him. Thomas saw the fix was in, that's what happened. After seeing what Hunter did to FLEET WHITE, and how much Hunter HATED Thomas, evident in the TV show where they faced off and Hunter could barely contain his blind hatred of Thomas, I believe Hunter wanted Thomas fired. Beckner was Hunter's butt boy, that was obvious, as well. But I don't think there is ANY reason other than Thomas was spoiling Hunter's OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE in the JB case.

On that TV show, Thomas kept his cool and made Hunter look EVEN MORE like the fool he is when every attack by Hunter was sent back straight and unanswered by Hunter. But Hunter NEVER brought up the Bardach leak. Why? Because Thomas had the WORSE accusation against Hunter, THE DA OF THE CASE: Hunter leaked to the TABS. Both leaks were known by then, so why didn't Hunter hit Thomas with this? Because he KNEW he HAD done worse as the DA, AND HUNTER SET THE BAR.

So if their story is that Thomas was going to be fired, either they're spinning or it was a bluff. There's a thing you learn in working for the government: they don't want ANYONE to know the truth about a scandal within. Not stealing, not sexual harassment, not lying, cheating, not murder.

But I guess there is another possibility: they were too stupid to realize that by cutting Thomas loose, they'd be begging for irreversible damage to the case, to their reputations when it became public, and assuring that Thomas no longer had any reason NOT to spill his guts about ALL their OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE in a child murder case. Since I do believe they are incompetent and corrupt beyond anything I've seen to date, perhaps this is true.
