I cannot watch or listen to Rita - her voice just freaks me out! She may have had a naturally throaty voice to start with, and then had surgery of some kind that dropped it further (thyroid surgery can do this). She may be or may have been a smoker.

I think I am one of the few people who actually like Rita. No, she isn't Woodward and Bernstein, but she has some entertaining shows.

I am very curious about her voice. Something is wrong. Even if she smoked it shouldn't sound like it does.

If anyone knows please post it. I need to know to make sure I don't end up with whatever she has. Last thing I need is for my voice to sound like I have been gargling Drano.

She just sounds like a heavy smoker to me. There's an Australian actress with a voice like this and a British one too. The Australian actress was in Neighbours and I think she might have played Kylie Minogue's mother but I can't remember her name (she was lovely but her voice was painful to listen to). The British actress is Ann Kirkbride of Coronation Street. I've heard her voice get lower and huskier over the years and she sounds very masculine now.

The one thing that would put me off smoking more than anything is what it does to your skin. There was an advertisement campaign a few years ago where they had identical twins in their 40s/50s. One had been a heavy smoker and the other one was a non-smoker. The smoker looked about 20 years older than her sister. My nieces are heavy smokers and they are such gorgeous girls - lovely complexions. It pains me to think of them losing that prematurely.

Tricia, this may not be the answer to that raspy voice, but I have seen high school CHEERLEADERS who get that kind of voice. They spend so many years screaming at ballgames and practices, they ruin their vocal cords. Nothing can be done. They have surgery on their cords for nodules they have built up over the years, but they seldom if ever get their original voice back.

Remember Julie Andrews? A long life of singing will do it. Her surgery didn't go well and now when she sings she sounds like a drag queen, with only a damaged low range left.

So maybe it's just from years and years of talking on camera. Maybe she was a cheerleader, too...?

That's the only idea I have--some kind of overuse. I don't like to hear Rita Cosby talk at all. I personally think her zeal in reporting at times is very inappropriate. She smiles like a giggly girl when reporting on devastating events, as well. Gives me the creeps. She's also the reporter who got that woman who knew Karr say that he told her "I did it" when he saw JonBenet on TV after her murder. Cosby was acting like best friends with that woman, and the woman said Karr was moving furniture in a house with her when he saw JonBenet's murder being talked about on TV. I personally wonder if Karr might have said something like "The BPD is so inept, they may as well think I did it...." The thing is, Cosby was leading the woman through the whole interview, and finally asked the woman something like "And Karr was moving furniture and when he saw JonBenet on TV, he told you 'I did it,' right?" And the woman agreed and repeated just what Cosby had said, with a big grin on her face. It was extremely silly and unprofessional, IMO.

Not to mention, Rita's got that Tracey "rat" thing going on with her appearance.

To me Rita's talking through her nose.

I wonder if she does smoke.

    RITA LOSES RASP
    ANCHOR GETS NEW VOICE
    By DON KAPLAN
Loading new images... January 30, 2007 -- RITA Cosby, the MSNBC anchor, has found her voice.

Since Cosby appeared on the air last week - after a three week "enforced" vacation in Mexico - her trademark rasp was gone and she was speaking in an unremarkable tone of voice.

Cosby declined to say what exactly she'd done to get her voice back.

But she did say that she had been to a see a doctor before her three weeks off the radar.

"There's nothing like going to the doctor and getting a prescription that includes an enforced vacation (I went to Mexico), getting some vocal rest, and coming back with a tan to this arctic weather," Cosby told the Post yesterday in a prepared statement.

"I am getting so many compliments about my voice, I intend to keep it this way. . . Thanks for noticing how energetic my voice sounds."

Cosby - who frequently seemed to be straining so hard when she spoke that the veins on her neck would visibly bulge - may have undergone one or several different treatments, according to NYU speech expert Dr. Milan Amin.

Surgery, speech therapy, medicine for acid reflux disease and even plain rest are among the standard treatments for a condition like Cosby's.

"You can't rule out the possibility that rest alone did this," says Amin,

"The real test will be if the raspiness comes back," he says.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sounds like something has changed...??? I can't listen to her dumb-blonde interviews anyway, so y'all will just have to let me know. I like that part about her neck veins bulging...ha ha ha...

I just found another website that mentions bulemia as a possible cause for that raspy voice...That would be very plausible, I think.

    That voice on RC,

I read somewhere that it is just a furthering of her natural breathy and raspy voice. I for one can't stand to listen to her because of it and the last time I did was when that devestating mine disaster happened where only one miner was rescued and is now still in rehab for his troubles. She was all over that disaster and would grab literally any passerby which she did. She reported that all were safe at one point then had to turn around and after grabing another passerby was told that there was only one survivor and that he was certainly cirtical. She has also been a friend of Dog the bounty hunter. When he was arrested and thrown in jail Beth, his wife, called Rita to see what she could do for him. Well, I guess I did have to listen to Rita then because I'm a fan of the DOG.

I will say that I've never been impressed with Rita or her style as it smacks of tabloid stuff and sensationalism. But maybe that is just me.

    Rita's Voice

The raspiness is from overuse. In plain English, Rita is a motormouth. She talks too much. I bet she even talks in her sleep, all night long.

Her poor husband or boyfriend or whatever...

That's it. I was coming back to post that her voice seems to be better (forgot to add that in the first post.)

Why in the hell won't she just come out and say what she had done and why? Seems like she is hiding something.

My bet is her raspy-ness will return.

KK, if she did damage her voice as a teen, which is very likely, then I can't imagine how she could have found a permanent fix for it. Vocal cords are very funny little things. Very sensitive.

I do voice work and I have to be very careful. If I talk too much then go to a recording session I am in trouble.

Cosby seems to be a lightening rod for criticism.

Does anyone at FFJ like her?

I have seen and heard her only a few times, Tricia, and truthfully, I don't care for her much. :-(

Yesterday on one of the shows, Crier or NG, they were showing the mob scene in the Bahamas and there was Rita Cosby right up front running after the car. It reminded me alot of this shot.

    Most of the time

I used to go out of my way to watch her shows. After a while, I did get tired of her voice, while liking it somewhat also...

I haven't heard her since she came back from her vacation.

I too have only watched Rita a few times on tv, but I will say she appeared so wishy washy....not interesting.

Don't know if many of you know, but I am a singer. :tsmile: (why don't we have a singing icon?)

Anyway, my thought has always been the "cheerleader" angle.. that she somehow strained or damaged her voice. It could be many things, but whatever it is, it isn't helped by improper vocal production. As for her "treatment"? It could be anything as simple as prednisone for a time, or she could have had some actual treatments/therapy. There are "voice doctors" (kind of like speech pathologists) who can define problems and give exercises to correct problems. Also, don't know if any of you are NPR people, but Diane Rheames (I am murdering the spelling of her name) has serious voice problems, with a serious quiver. Every so often she goes for treatments that help to get her back on track.

Beautiful Julie Andrews and her pure, clear voice is a very sad case. The surgeon supposedly botched her operation. I still think she sounds okay, but I know how must she must ache to have her voice back. The voice, one's unique instrument, is an emotional part of a singer, and I am sure that it has been difficult for her to accept. It would be like losing a close family member, that part of yourself that you rely upon to communicate your emotions through song.

Driver, I didn't know you are a singer!

I understand what you mean about one's voice. When I had thyroid surgery, my voice lowered, and I can no longer reach the higher end of the scale, which is why I wondered if Rita had had the same thing. It was very distressing to me at first. I've adjusted to it but I miss being able to sing some songs...I just don't have those notes any more.

Of course, I don't even qualify as a singer, just love music.

What do you sing, if I may ask? Yes, we do need a singer smiley!

Wow, Driver, I didn't know that about you. And you're right, we DO need a singing icon. I really can't believe we've been slighted for so long. :violin:

You said it so well about a singer's voice being "an emotional part of the singer" and that losing it "would be like losing a close family member." I can relate to that as I was raised in a musical family, and we all sing and play various instruments. There have been times when lupus has robbed my mother of her singing voice. The first time it happened, she was absolutely devasted to think she could never sing again. When the lupus went into temporary remission, her voice came back, but it has never been as strong as it once was.

I agree that Rita may have had some prednisone treatments to reduce the inflammation of her vocal chords, plus rest is always helpful of course. Another thing vocal specialists will do is train a person to speak from their diaphram instead of straining the vocal chords. The extreme tightening of the vocal chords in the throat just aggravates the problem. If Rita's veins were popping out on her neck, then she was not speaking properly and doing permanent damage to her vocal chords. And if she smokes, she'd better stop. If she isn't careful, she'll end up with no voice but a raspy whisper.

    Tricia,
You asked if anyone here liked Rita? Sorry, lol, but I can't stand her. During the Scott Peterson trial we called her Raspy Rita. I just don't like her style of reporting and no, I don't like her voice. :laffbig:

To me she sounds like someone who has asthma that needs to use their inhaler.
