Even Hitler Had A Girlfriend is an early '90s movie that I saw but don't remember a single scene from -- according to IMDB.com it's about a guy who spends all his money on call girls. Despite its being a forgettable film, it had a memorable title, insistent on reminding you, if you're single (like me) that the embodiment of evil did better on the romantic front than you're doing right now.

It's a sad fact, but out of all the complex things in the universe we have come to understand, our own human hearts remain a mystery. Many's the time I, and probably you, have looked at some unlikely couple and invoked the Joe Jackson lyric, "Is she really going out with him?" (Or he with her.) Hormones. They make a hit of acid look like a Shirley Temple.

That said, about as often as the pass of Halley's comet, they manage to hit on an appropriate couple. Gable and Lombard. Newman and Woodward. Woodward and Bernstein. It's rare, but when it happens, you have to love it.

The latest intriguing alleged hookup of public figures is between Beth Holloway Twitty and John Ramsey, mainly because of why they're known. Twitty is the mother of Natalee Holloway, the 18-year-old college student who went missing in Aruba in 2005, and Ramsey is the father of JonBenet, the little beauty queen whose murder was never solved. Ramsey has denied the romance, the New York Post reports that Fox News says (how's that for a game of telephone?) that " the pair has been spotted openly kissing and holding hands in Mountain Brook, Ala., where Twitty lives."

I hope it's romantic, because I hope everything is . . . though initially the idea of this pairing seems to give people a bit of the creeps. But when you think about it, who else can understand the defining event of each of these people's lives better than the other one can? Who ever prefers "I can only imagine what you must be feeling" to "I know exactly what you're feeling"?

Hits and misses

For all the matches that you could scratch your head bald wondering "Why?", fate occasionally makes a good choice. In that way romantic love is a little bit like M. Night Shyamalan or Adam Sandler. For every few times it produces "Eh, it was OK," it produces one thing that's just right the way it is.

On the other hand, it doesn't seem like that long ago I instantly thought the same thing about Marilyn Manson and Dita Von Teese, inarguably the most intriguing-looking celebrity pair ever (except for Eddie Van Halen and Valerie Bertinelli, who could have passed for twins -- that was creepy). They were match made in Hot Topic, and, I thought, destined by their mutual theatrical sensibilities to be together.

That will just go to show you not to listen to me at the dog track. The couple split up some months ago, and the latest word on the whole thing is that Manson is concerned about the return of what BANG Showbiz calls his "stuffed animals."

"I have four taxidermied baboons, two monkeys, a white peacock, a turtle and a wild boar. . . When you get separated, you lose so much. I don't know what she'll say when I ask for them back," Manson has said.

I don't know Marilyn Manson. I know he was quite articulate in Bowling for Columbine, and recall him coming off as someone you might want to know in Chuck Palahniuk's Stranger than Fiction. The little I know makes him seem like a pretty decent guy with unique taste in contact lenses.

And, obviously, home decor. The only other notable person I've ever heard of who collected taxidermied animals was Norman Bates. It might not be a blood-red flag. But it might be a burnt-orange flag. Put it this way: It's probably not something a lot of guys put on their match.com profile. "I just want someone to go to the movies with, who wants to talk for hours about their hopes and dreams and who shares my taste for designing with dead things." Profile views: 562. Messages: none.

You, too, may have lamented separation from your inanimate baboons during your last split, but because you're not a rock star nobody quoted you on it. Lack of public significance has its perks. At least our breakups, hookups and crackups aren't for public consumption.

But more of our lives might be thanks to Google's new Street View map, which allows you to see city streets with photographic realism -- mainly because they are photographs of those streets. It's pretty snazzy-looking in the preview, but it turns out to be a tad annoying for those poor dopes who happen to be leaving a strip club, relieving themselves in the street, or for those who just feel ooky about having their homes or activities captured by a camera.

Fair enough, but in a way it almost seems like a logical extension of America's obsession with celebrity. Whether it's tabloidian or Orwellian, it looks as if we've all achieved the status of being on-camera talent . . . whether we like it or not.
