S.J. attorney's legal guidance draws rebukes from judges
CLIENTS CLAIM THEY WERE MISLED ABOUT CONSEQUENCES OF PLEADING GUILTY
    By Mike Zapler
    Mercury News

San Jose defense attorney Jamie Harmon portrays herself on her Web site as an experienced lawyer, capable of navigating the complexities of California law to ensure clients receive ``the best possible outcome'' in their cases.

But in the past two years, a series of judicial findings have painted a more disturbing picture -- of a lawyer whose clients in some cases have struggled to overcome her dismal guidance.

On three occasions, Harmon, a former deputy district attorney, has been cited by judges for providing incorrect legal advice. Each time, her clients had claimed she did little preparation or investigation, and pressured them to plead guilty by misleading them about the consequences. And each time, Harmon's mistakes forced the legal system to explore whether defendants who admitted wrongdoing should be allowed to withdraw their pleas.

In one instance, she was secretly caught on tape misadvising her client. After Harmon's actions became known, the defendant withdrew his plea, went to trial and eventually was acquitted."

Who is paying for this attorney?

She is not a public defender, and I don't think Van Zandt is either.

    Great find, VP ...

... Looks like Karr has a death wish!

I have to assume that the Harmon wench was just the California counsel for Karr ... to expedite the extradition ... and that he'll have different representation in Boulder.

My guess is that extradition was inevitable, and in exchange for getting the California porn possession charges dropped, Karr was willing to waive extradition. So far, it apprears that no harm has been done.

    ...YumYum

I haven't read or heard anything that Karr cut a deal with Sonoma authorities but it's an interesting notion.

Harmon does seem to be getting her career off on the wrong foot, eh? Van Zandt was a public defender at the time she represented Karr in 2001. Since then, she's gone into private practice with a law firm in the area.

From the way Harmon talked in her interviews today, it's not a done deal she'll be representing Karr in Boulder. To the best of my knowledge, she is not licensed to practice in CO and would need an attorney who is to "sponsor" her if she does. Highly unlikely. Karr will either be assigned a CO public defender or accept representation from one of the many I'm sure are hammering to take him on as a client.

Gloria Allred is in awe of Lacy? Good God, woman, wake up and smell the Rocky Mountain high brewing!

I repeat from another thread --

Deja, KoldKase, anyone - what if Karr works a deal with Lacy to plead to a lesser charge? No GJ, no hearings, no trial, no psychologist??

    Van Zandt and Harmon

are advising Karrina - and they said they can say DEFINITELY, and on good authority, that DNA has NOT been taken from Karr, despite what the media has reported.

Shadow, I already posted a response to your questions on another thread. I don't remember which one, but you do, right????

According to VanZandt and Harmon, Karr will definitely be represented by counsel in CO who will "invite" him to not enter a guilty plea and they are confident he will accept their invitation. I highly doubt Lacy will offer Karr a plea bargain. The charges they intend to slam him with are capital crimes and, she will argue, the Ramseys deserve the full on prosecution.
